Purpose of your role

The Investment Specialist provides a product support role to Portfolio Managers, Investment Director, Product & Relationship Managers, Sales & Marketing, Management, Business Relationship Managers and PR / Corporate Communications for the products that he / she is covering.

The various tasks that specialist will need to support include : production of pitch books, existing funds analysis, peer reviews, marketing collateral and input for the RFP / RFI team, client reporting etc..

  • The Investment Specialist needs to understand the basic logic under current portfolio construction across equity and fixed income : why individual stocks / bonds are held in the portfolio, how they fit into the Portfolio Manager’s strategy and what could cause them to be bought / sold;
  • the logic behind the current duration and credit position, i.e., does the PM have a trigger price or valuation target or is the PM playing a particular event / theme through holding the security.

    Because of the need to establish and maintain this depth of understanding, the Investment Specialist will need to have an excellent understanding of their products under coverage (including markets, securities, and portfolios), to establish a strong rapport with the Portfolio Managers of that product and to identify an appropriate working relationship tailored to the individual.

    Each Portfolio Manager is very individual in both their approach to working and to investing. The Investment Specialist must adapt their approach accordingly.

    Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare presentations on behalf of Portfolio Managers for both internal and external events and meetings, together with the Investment Directing team.
  • Analyse funds, markets and securities to write regular reports and commentary.
  • Provide regular and ad hoc support to the Portfolio Manager in the ongoing review and management of his / her portfolio(s) to the extent required by each individual, e.
  • g., project work, risk analysis, investment marketing activities.

  • Pro-actively write thought pieces and provide information, themes, interesting portfolio statistics and other information to internal channels relating to the products and markets for which he / she is responsible.
  • Provide non-standard reports that may be required from any internal client.
  • The individual needs to have a pro-active approach to the role, constantly monitoring the activity in the portfolio, its holdings, the strategy, themes and resulting performance.
  • Respond to press requests for interviews, quotes and articles on funds and markets under their product coverage.
  • Manage and respond to ad-hoc queries from internal customers including sales, marketing and RFP teams.
  • Review marketing literature relating to the product under coverage.
  • Provide marketing and sales feedback to the portfolio managers.
  • Ensure Fidelity’s investment process and approach is communicated effectively and accurately.
  • Experience and Qualifications Required

  • Excellent command of verbal and written English and Mandarin
  • At least 3+ years finance, investment or investment communications background.
  • Strong investment knowledge with a good understanding of the investment process.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills. A strong capability with MS Office i.e. Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Good up-to-date knowledge of China markets and the ability to conduct market analysis.
  • Good awareness of the competitive environment for China products.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret performance data and to write commentaries around the data.
  • High attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple relationships internally.
  • An insatiable appetite for data on the portfolio, markets and peer product will underpin the pro-active approach required by the role.
  • Service-orientated approach is essential.
  • Ability to multi-task across numerous responsibilities and projects
  • Verbal presentation skills in English and Mandarin
